AMD on Tuesday extended support for FSR 4.1 to older Radeon RX 6000 cards and certain Ryzen processors. According to AMD, the technology should upscale games using artificial intelligence without rendering every image fully at its original resolution.
According to ComputerBase, the update will be available through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1. ComputerBase says it covers Radeon RX 6000 cards and selected Ryzen AI and Ryzen AI Max APUs. According to the technology site, support was previously available on a more limited basis.
FSR is a collection of technologies designed to reconstruct game images more intelligently. By combining a lower internal resolution with image data from successive frames, a game can, according to the company, achieve higher frame rates or use less computing power.
AMD now describes the new version as part of FSR Redstone. On its own website, the company refers to ML-based upscaling, frame generation, ray regeneration and radiance caching. According to AMD, the exact features available vary by game and hardware.
The expansion does not mean that every game will automatically benefit. According to AMD, developers must support the technology, or players must activate a compatible setting through AMD Software. AMD also notes that its own benchmarks were conducted under specific test conditions.
According to AMD, FSR 4.1 will also be coming to the Xbox Series X and S soon. No specific release date has been given. The new support will keep older hardware usable for longer, but image quality and performance will vary from game to game.
