Spanish games studio Digital Sun is scrapping a public playtest of its new game ReVamp. The company fears that footage and game mechanics could be recreated using AI before the original is released.

Digital Sun initially intended to run a public test of ReVamp. The studio is now opting for a closed test via Discord, with players admitted in stages.

According to the studio, a public test can spread a great deal of material: gameplay footage, screenshots, design elements and information about the underlying systems. Digital Sun says that material could be used to make a copy quickly.

The change affects an important part of how smaller studios operate. Open tests provide feedback and visibility, but also give competitors early access to ideas and technical details.

The studio does not say that a specific competitor has made a copy. The concern is about the speed with which AI tools could reproduce existing visuals, game mechanics and systems.

A closed test limits the spread of information, but offers no complete protection. Participants can still share information, and copyright does not always protect ideas and game mechanics in the same way as concrete code, images or music. The issue shows that developers are looking for a new balance between open development, marketing and the protection of intellectual property.
