The documentary You Can See Everything about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes has achieved a high cinema gross in the United States, according to Variety. The film grossed $15 million in 855 cinemas during its opening weekend, according to Variety.
The film was directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim. In the documentary, Holmes takes part in a portrait of the period before she serves a prison sentence for fraud relating to her former blood-testing company Theranos.
The gross is notable because the film played in fewer than 1,000 cinemas. Variety calls it the biggest opening since 2006 for a film released in fewer than 1,000 venues. The figures mainly show that interest was high relative to the limited distribution.
The film was previously screened at the Telluride Film Festival and subsequently attracted attention at the New York Film Festival. According to reports, the combination of access to Holmes, her public history and an unusual narrative form helped build interest.
The cinema gross is a commercial result and, in itself, offers no judgement on the film’s journalistic or artistic quality.
The documentary will also be released outside the United States later. One cinema chain lists screenings in the US market from 16 October. No confirmed release date for the Netherlands was available in the sources consulted.
Holmes became known as the founder of Theranos, a company that promised to carry out many medical tests using a small amount of blood. The company collapsed after its technology and corporate communications were heavily criticised. Holmes was convicted of fraud in the United States.
