The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets has approved Videoland’s acquisition of Viaplay Netherlands. This brings a transaction announced by DPG Media months ago one step closer to completion.
Videoland, part of DPG Media, may acquire Viaplay’s Dutch streaming and television operations. The ACM approved the concentration following an application by the companies. In its public notice, the regulator does not mention any conditions restricting the transaction.
The agreement was announced in July. Viaplay Group said it would sell its Dutch operations for €142 million and focus more strongly on its core Scandinavian markets. The Dutch arm included the streaming service, two linear channels and the associated programming and sports rights.
The acquisition includes sports rights, among other assets. Once completed, Videoland will gain access to Formula 1, the English Premier League and international darts events, among other content. The approval alone does not make clear what the acquisition means for existing subscriptions, prices and apps.
When assessing a takeover, the ACM considers whether competition in relevant markets is significantly restricted. In this case, those markets include streaming and audiovisual sports content. The regulator has previously examined the position of platforms, channels and providers of pay television in media transactions.
The approval does not mean that all changes will take effect immediately. Approval and implementation of an acquisition are separate steps. For Viaplay subscribers, the question is when Videoland and DPG will transfer rights, programmes and any contracts.
The combination could become a stronger competitor in the Dutch market to services such as Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and HBO Max. At the same time, it could make the choice simpler for sports viewers, but also lead to changes in bundles and subscription prices. The approval of 20 October does not in itself provide clarity on such changes.
One story, several perspectives
What is established
- The ACM has approved Videoland’s acquisition of Viaplay Netherlands.
- Videoland is part of DPG Media.
- The transaction covers Viaplay’s Dutch operations and sports content.
- The consequences for prices and subscriptions are not yet fully known.
Left
Arguments A larger Dutch player could strengthen public oversight and investment in local content, but concentration in the media sector requires close attention to affordability and freedom of choice.
Values Accessible culture and sport, job security and limiting market power.
Consequences Subscribers could benefit from bundling, but also face the risk of higher prices or fewer alternatives.
Centre
Arguments The acquisition could be efficient as long as sufficient competition remains and the transition is handled transparently for consumers.
Values Competition law, consumer protection and predictable market rules.
Consequences A controlled integration could improve content and technology, but oversight will remain necessary when prices and exclusive rights change.
Right
Arguments Private media companies should be given room to adapt to international competition and divest loss-making operations.
Values Entrepreneurship, property rights and market forces.
Consequences A stronger player could give Dutch media companies greater clout, but consumers must be able to choose which service they use.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
