Amsterdam and the organisers of Amsterdam Dance Event are taking extra measures this weekend to help visitors get home more safely. Cycle buddies will be present along some routes, while organisers are deploying awareness teams and hosts.
The measures apply during the ongoing Amsterdam Dance Event, which takes place from 21 to 25 October. The municipality says it is working with organisers and the IVY Foundation, which, according to the municipality, provides organisers with guidance on social safety.
At DGTL at the NDSM wharf, two escorts cycle between the event site and the ferry during the night-time hours. They are visibly present and can approach or assist visitors. Using a pair is also intended to increase the escorts’ own safety.
At Awakenings, a Goodbye Host is stationed at the exit. They help visitors with routes and public transport and provide a charging point for phones. Both events also have awareness teams present to support visitors and draw attention to respecting personal boundaries.
The municipality says it is linking the measures to the broader Celebrate Safe campaign. The campaign also focuses on bystanders and explains how they can respond when they witness intimidation, violence or other inappropriate behaviour. The municipality says everyone should be able to feel safe in nightlife.
The measures are intended to support visitors and help prevent unsafe situations. It is not yet known whether they will actually lead to fewer incidents.

Left
Arguments The government and organisers have a responsibility to make public spaces and nightlife venues actively safer, particularly for people at risk of intimidation or violence.
Values Equal access to nightlife, protection from inappropriate behaviour and collective responsibility.
Consequences More visible support and prevention can lower the barriers to seeking help, but require ongoing funding and evaluation.
Centre
Arguments The measures are a practical addition to security and public transport, provided it remains clear who is responsible for what and what the results are.
Values Proportionality, feasibility and measurable public safety.
Consequences The approach may provide immediate help during busy nights, but should be evaluated afterwards before being made permanent.
Right
Arguments Organisers and visitors should initially take responsibility for behaviour and safety themselves; the government should mainly provide the framework and enforcement.
Values Personal responsibility, public order and efficient government action.
Consequences A limited, targeted deployment can keep costs manageable, but too little oversight can leave problems unseen or unmanageable.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
