MediaMarktSaturn is launching a new partner programme under which independent entrepreneurs can operate MediaMarkt stores. The first locations are planned for Germany; the group then intends to roll out the model internationally.
According to parent company Ceconomy, independent retailers can convert an existing site into a MediaMarkt store or open a new branch. The partner will assume day-to-day responsibility for staff, local marketing and parts of the product range.
According to the announcement, MediaMarktSaturn will retain control of the central commercial functions. The company will remain responsible for the brand, prices, promotions, central systems, product range and integration with online sales.
The model therefore differs from a traditional franchise arrangement, in which the entrepreneur generally bears greater commercial and financial responsibility. RetailDetail reports that MediaMarkt intends to continue managing stock and the central flow of goods itself.
According to reports, the first stores under the programme are due to open in Germany from mid-2027. The model could subsequently be expanded to other countries, but MediaMarktSaturn has not yet named any specific locations in the Netherlands.
The development is relevant to the Netherlands because MediaMarkt already has a large store network there. The Dutch company states on its website that the chain has 55 stores in the Netherlands.
The company presents the programme as a way to expand its physical stores with local entrepreneurs. For those entrepreneurs, the brand and central infrastructure may offer advantages, while they will be responsible for day-to-day operations.
The precise conditions for participation, fees and distribution of risks are still being worked out. It is therefore not yet clear how many new stores the programme will actually deliver or what it will mean for existing Dutch branches.
