NHL Stenden’s Frisian teacher-training programmes have more than thirty participants this academic year. According to the programme, this is the highest intake in years and more than double the number of enrolments.

NHL Stenden reports eighteen new enrolments and sixteen students entering through a minor, Firda or the Afûk. The participants are not all following the same route or programme; together, the figures represent the intake for Frisian-related training.

The programme links the growth to demand for Frisian teachers in primary education, secondary education, secondary vocational education and adult education. NHL Stenden also cites the Jou Frysk recruitment campaign as a possible explanation.

The increase comes at a time when schools in Fryslân are working on continuous learning pathways for the Frisian language. The programme says that the need for qualified teachers is greater than the current supply.

It is not yet known how many of these students will ultimately complete their training or work in education. Nor is it clear how the intake compares with the total number of vacancies for Frisian teachers.

The higher intake does not yet prove that the teacher shortage has been resolved. This would require figures on dropout rates, graduation and the placement of graduates in schools.

One story, several perspectives
What is established
  • NHL Stenden reports more than thirty participants in routes related to Frisian teacher training.
  • According to the programme, the intake has more than doubled.
  • No cited figures cover graduation or movement into schools.
Centre

Arguments The higher intake is welcome, but policy should be based on the entire chain: training, qualifications, vacancies and teacher retention. Cooperation between schools and the training provider is essential.

Values Efficiency, continuity and measurable results.

Consequences Targeted support may be more effective than general expansion if guidance or placement is the main bottleneck.

Right

Arguments The demand from schools and students should determine how many programmes are needed. If there really is work available, employers and the region can each bear part of the recruitment and funding costs.

Values Freedom of choice, labour-market relevance and regional responsibility.

Consequences Greater market incentives could increase intake, but could also lead to disparities between regions with and without financial resources.

The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
