Taiwan closed schools and offices on Friday because of Typhoon Champi. Hundreds of flights were cancelled and residents of vulnerable mountainous areas evacuated as the storm brought heavy rain and strong winds.

According to news agency AP, schools and government offices were closed extensively and hundreds of flights cancelled. Financial markets also remained shut. Public life was restricted mainly in the north and east of the island.

Reuters reported that all 262 domestic flights scheduled for Friday had been cancelled, along with more than 350 international flights. According to Reuters, public transport in Taipei continued to operate in part, but with a reduced timetable.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration reported that Champi was still producing gusts of around 191 kilometres per hour near the island. According to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration, the typhoon had weakened, but its size meant it was still affecting a large part of Taiwan.

According to Reuters, around 1,300 people had been evacuated from mountainous areas. Reuters reported one death and 94 injuries. AP’s report gave no casualty figure.

The storm was expected to pass Taiwan before moving towards the coast of China and southern Japan. Taiwan has extensive experience with typhoons and comprehensive evacuation and warning systems, but heavy rain can still cause flooding and landslides.
