Alexandra, Baroness Van Zuylen van Nijevelt van de Haar, died on Friday at the age of 69. She was involved for many years with the foundation that manages De Haar Castle and the surrounding heritage.
The De Haar Castle Foundation announced her death. Van Zuylen died on Friday morning, 23 October, according to the foundation. The castle in Haarzuilens will close its shutters until her funeral as a sign of mourning.
From 1996, Van Zuylen was involved with her father Thierry in determining the future of the former family property. That year, the castle and park were placed under the care of a foundation so that the monument could be preserved for the public.
After her father died in 2011, she took over his role within the foundation. She remained a member of the Supervisory Board until the end of 2024. According to the foundation, she handed that responsibility over to her sister Vanessa van Zuylen in 2025.
De Haar Castle is regarded as an important example of historic architecture and interior art in the Netherlands. The present castle was rebuilt at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century to designs by Pierre Cuypers, commissioned by the Van Zuylen family.
The family transferred the castle and park to a foundation in 1996. According to the foundation, the surrounding Haarzuilens Estate was later transferred to Natuurmonumenten. According to the foundation, that arrangement made restoration and continued opening to visitors possible.
Van Zuylen's funeral will take place in Paris. The foundation describes her as a committed former member of the Supervisory Board and emphasises her longstanding efforts to preserve the castle.
