A major fire has been burning since the night of Friday to Saturday in commercial premises on Sydneystraat in Rotterdam. The building houses, among other things, a food wholesaler; no one was injured.
The fire broke out at Zestienhoven business park in north-west Rotterdam. According to the fire service, the building was completely ablaze inside and flames broke through to the outside at around 2.15am.
According to the available information, the building is larger than 1,000 square metres. The fire service deployed several units and large-scale water transport to fight the fire and prevent neighbouring buildings from catching fire.
Part of the business park was closed off. The site is near Rotterdam The Hague Airport, but there has been no report that air traffic was disrupted by the fire.
According to a spokesperson for the safety region, three companies were based in the building. Besides the food wholesaler, these included other businesses, among them a repair company for diesel fuel injection systems. According to the same spokesperson, this does not mean that large quantities of diesel were stored in the building.
Because the building was initially unsafe to enter, the fire was tackled from outside, according to regional reports. The building is considered lost, but the fire service kept the situation under control to prevent the fire spreading to other buildings.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. It will be investigated at a later stage. It is also not yet clear what consequences the fire will have for the companies that were based in the building.
