Flooding in north-eastern Argentina has affected almost 2,300 people, according to the Pan American Health Organization. The organisation reports that two people died while trying to move livestock to higher ground.

The problems are mainly occurring in the provinces of Corrientes and Chaco, along the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. The Pan American Health Organization reported, based on regional authorities, that 1,084 people had been affected in Corrientes. In Chaco, the figure was 1,194 people.

In Corrientes, hundreds of people were accommodated in government facilities or with family. In Itatí, a town on the river, 411 people had been evacuated and 27 had left on their own, according to the health organisation. The same organisation said that accommodation facilities had also been made available in parts of Chaco.

Argentina’s federal disaster authority said that on 22 October it coordinated relief efforts with provincial governments and security forces. According to the authority, teams visited accommodation centres and discussed developments in water levels. The government says the assistance is part of a preparedness plan for the El Niño or ENSO season.

The Argentine coastguard has also reported helping residents in flooded areas. According to the coastguard, personnel in Paso de la Patria helped 15 families, 61 people in total, with food, drinking water, medicines and water-purification supplies. In Itatí, the coastguard also said it assisted with transporting 15 pupils who were having difficulty reaching their school because roads had been flooded.

The Pan American Health Organization reported that the Paraná in Chaco had reached a level of 7.29 metres. In Paso de la Patria, an embankment had earlier given way when the water stood at 7.63 metres. Several neighbourhoods were flooded as a result. According to the organisation, a national road remained closed because of the water.

The flooding is relevant to the region because the Paraná and Uruguay rivers provide access to important waterways and agricultural areas. The Argentine government is particularly emphasising preparedness and relief efforts. The total extent of the material damage and when all evacuated residents will be able to return remain unclear.
