The Netherlands will again face unsettled autumn weather on Saturday evening. KNMI is warning of strong gusts, particularly along the coast and on the Wadden Islands, as Storm Boelo approaches from the north-west.
From Saturday evening, KNMI expects strong gusts of 75 to 90 kilometres per hour in coastal areas and South Limburg. In the western Wadden Sea area, gusts of more than 100 kilometres per hour may occur. According to KNMI, code yellow applies to several provinces.
According to KNMI, Boelo follows Storm Austen, which brought strong winds and rain on Friday and during the night into Saturday. According to KNMI, Boelo will move eastwards later on Saturday from the area around Scotland. The associated cold front will reach the Netherlands during the night into Sunday.
As well as wind, the system will bring more rain. According to its model assessment, KNMI expects around 20 to 40 millimetres of precipitation with the frontal system. Because the ground is already wet in many places, additional rain could cause localised flooding.
KNMI is warning particularly of strong gusts in coastal areas. KNMI points out that trees are still carrying a lot of leaves, which could cause branches to break off. According to KNMI, winds along the coast and over the IJsselmeer may temporarily become storm-force.
The UK Met Office is likewise expecting strong winds and rain in the north and west of the United Kingdom. Warnings have been issued there for Saturday and Sunday. Boelo’s precise strength varies from place to place and remains dependent on the course of the low-pressure system.
This is a weather forecast, not a measurement of damage that has already occurred. The eventual wind strength and any damage remain uncertain.
