A fire broke out on Sunday afternoon at a storage warehouse belonging to Domeinen Roerende Zaken in Bleiswijk, the government service that, among other things, stores confiscated goods. Because of the smoke, residents of Bleiswijk and surrounding towns were advised to close windows and doors and switch off ventilation.
According to local reports, the fire was reported at around 12.15pm on Overbuurtseweg. According to local reports, the fire brigade classified it as a very large fire and declared GRIP 1, enabling emergency services to coordinate their response. Images and reports showed a large amount of dark smoke.
The safety warning applied not only to Bleiswijk but also to parts of Gouda, Waddinxveen and Zevenhuizen. The N209 between Bleiswijk and the Hoefweg-Zuid industrial area was closed, according to a report distributed by ANP. When the closure would end was unclear when the reports appeared.
Domeinen Roerende Zaken comes under the Ministry of Finance. The service manages goods confiscated, for example, by the police, the public prosecution service or the Tax and Customs Administration. It is not yet known what goods were stored in the affected part of the warehouse or whether they were damaged by the fire.
The fire brigade was still fighting the blaze on Sunday afternoon. Local sources reported that the smoke later decreased, but that emergency services were still investigating exactly what was burning in the warehouse. It is not yet known whether anyone was killed or injured.
Nothing has yet been established about the cause either. The available sources contain no indication that the fire was started deliberately. The NL-Alert concerned the smoke, not an established hazardous-substances incident. New information from the fire brigade, safety region or police may still change the picture.
