Anthropic on Monday filed a registration statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a flotation. The company behind the AI assistant Claude wants to list its shares on Nasdaq, but has not yet set a price or number of shares.
The filing is an important formal step towards a stock-market listing. Anthropic wants to issue Class A ordinary shares under the symbol ANT. The registration is not yet effective: the shares may only be offered after the SEC has approved the documents and the final prospectus is available.
The documents state that Anthropic plans to proceed with the flotation, but that the precise size and price of the offering have yet to be determined. It is therefore also unclear how much money the company wants to raise through the operation or at what valuation investors will be able to buy in.
The move comes at a time when investors are pouring large sums into companies developing artificial intelligence. According to Reuters, the prospectus shows that Anthropic is growing rapidly, but is also facing high costs and substantial investment needs. Developing and operating advanced AI models requires significant computing power and infrastructure.
The flotation is therefore seen as a test of how financial markets assess the value of AI companies. Anthropic is one of the best-known specialised AI labs and competes with, among others, OpenAI. The company has received backing from major technology companies, but remains dependent on substantial capital investment to expand its systems.
Reuters writes that the planned listing is taking place while the market for new listings has become less active. Turmoil in financial markets may prompt companies to postpone a flotation or adjust its terms. Anthropic filed the registration on Monday; the price and number of shares have not yet been set.
For Dutch users and companies, the move is particularly relevant because a stock-market listing could provide greater insight into the costs, revenues and risks of an important AI provider. Until the final prospectus and SEC approval are available, much information about the company’s financial position and eventual valuation remains open.
