Veilig Thuis received significantly more advice requests and reports about domestic violence and child abuse in the first half of 2026 than a year earlier. The organisation also reports a sharp increase in reports concerning acute danger.

Veilig Thuis provided 97,815 pieces of advice in the first six months of 2026. According to Veilig Thuis, that is 15 per cent more than in the same period of 2025. The number of reports rose by 9 per cent to 73,950.

The organisation says that schools in particular are increasingly turning to Veilig Thuis. According to the organisation, the number of advice requests from schools and other educational institutions rose by 15 per cent compared with the first half of 2025. According to the organisation, members of the public and other professionals also made contact more often.

The number of reports involving acute danger rose by 41 per cent, from 4,765 in the first half of 2025 to 6,735 in the same period of 2026. Around 70 per cent of the reports concerned suspected structural danger.

Veilig Thuis says situations are becoming increasingly complex. As a result, the organisation says, a careful assessment is more often needed before it becomes clear what assistance or protection is appropriate. The increase in the number of contacts does not automatically mean that violence was established in all those cases.

The figures show an increase in the number of contacts. They do not indicate what caused that increase.

At the same time, Veilig Thuis reports that pressure on staff and waiting lists is rising. Greater awareness may lower the threshold for seeking advice, while the additional demand is putting the capacity of regional organisations under pressure.

The figures are statistics for the first half of 2026. They say something about reports and advice requests, but not directly about the actual number of violent situations in the Netherlands.

One story, several perspectives
What is established
  • Veilig Thuis recorded more advice requests and reports in the first half of 2026 than in the same period of 2025.
  • According to Veilig Thuis, the number of reports of acute danger rose by 41 per cent.
  • The figures measure contacts with Veilig Thuis and not directly the total number of violent situations.
Centre

Arguments The increase calls for better recording, triage and cooperation between Veilig Thuis, education, the police and care services. Policymakers should take the rise seriously without interpreting every contact as proven violence.

Values Carefulness, feasibility and data-driven policymaking.

Consequences Targeted strengthening of the chain of services could speed up assistance, but requires clear criteria and evaluation.

Right

Arguments The rising number of reports suggests that protection and enforcement may be falling short. Alongside support services, clear boundaries, swift intervention and perpetrator accountability are needed.

Values Safety, responsibility and protecting families.

Consequences A stronger enforcement approach could stop acute situations more quickly, but must avoid deterring people from seeking advice out of fear of sanctions.

The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
