Amazon announced a new range of Alexa devices on Wednesday, including an Echo Studio with a built-in camera. Echo Time, a smart alarm clock without a camera that can use sleep detection, is also being launched.

According to Amazon, the Echo Studio with Home Camera can recognise its surroundings and respond accordingly. Users can, for example, ask for information about an object held in front of the camera. Through the Alexa app, they can also view the room remotely.

Amazon says the camera and microphones can be switched off with a dedicated button. A visible light should indicate when the camera is streaming images. The manufacturer is also retaining a camera-free version of the Echo Studio in its range.

The new speaker costs $249.99 in the United States and, according to Amazon, is available immediately. The existing camera-free Echo Studio remains available for $219.99. The announcement consulted did not state availability or pricing in the Netherlands.

Alongside the speaker, Amazon is introducing Echo Time, a smart alarm clock for the bedside table. The device has no camera and, according to the company, can use optional sleep detection to try to wake someone during a lighter phase of sleep. According to Amazon, the alarm clock costs $199.99 in the United States.

The announcement fits into Amazon’s broader effort to give Alexa more context. This could make devices easier to use, but could also mean that sensors in homes process images, sound and patterns of daily life more frequently. For users, the question is what protection the button, the settings and the handling of data provide in practice.

Amazon presents the products as tools for everyday life. It is not yet clear how long camera footage will be stored. It is therefore not yet possible to establish how the new functions will relate in practice to existing privacy risks.

One story, several perspectives
What is established
  • Amazon introduced an Echo Studio with a camera and a camera-free Echo Time.
  • The devices can offer image-recognition and sleep-detection functions.
  • Amazon says users can switch off the camera and microphones.
Centre

Arguments The devices could be useful, but users must be given understandable settings, genuine freedom of choice and transparency. The institutional approach lies in privacy by design, oversight and clear accountability.

Values Proportionality, consumer protection and scope for technological innovation.

Consequences Clear standards could increase trust without banning all smart devices, but would require oversight that keeps pace with new functions.

Right

Arguments Consumers should be able to decide for themselves which devices they buy and which functions they activate. Competition and voluntary choice could produce better privacy products than broad government rules.

Values Individual responsibility, freedom of choice and limited government intervention.

Consequences Greater choice could stimulate innovation, but people unable to understand the terms will remain dependent on manufacturers’ settings and promises.

The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
