Brazilian industrial federation CNI has lowered its forecast for economic growth in 2026 from 2 to 1.6 per cent. Industry and the services sector in particular are expected to grow less strongly than previously thought.

The new estimate appears in the third-quarter economic report published by CNI on Wednesday. The organisation cites less favourable prospects for manufacturing and services as the main reasons for the downward revision.

According to CNI, high interest rates, weaker domestic demand and deteriorating financial conditions are weighing on businesses and households. Growth in agriculture and extractive industries provides a counterbalance, but those sectors do not fully offset the slowdown elsewhere.

The estimate is not an official forecast by the Brazilian government or the national statistics office. CNI represents industry and therefore primarily reflects the perspective of businesses. The organisation may revise its forecast again later if interest rates, demand or world trade change.

The revision raises the question of how Brazil can combine economic growth with efforts to combat inflation. High financing costs make it more difficult for businesses and households to invest and consume. CNI also points to worse financial conditions for families.

The revision may be relevant to Dutch companies operating in Brazil. Lower growth could dampen demand for machinery, industrial goods and services. At the same time, exporters could benefit from sectors that are growing, such as agriculture and mining.

The new forecast says nothing about the distribution of income or developments in individual regions. Nor has it been established that interest rates alone are responsible for the slowdown. CNI cites several factors that, according to the organisation, contribute to the lower growth forecast.

The figures are primarily a signal that growth is expected to slow, not that the Brazilian economy is contracting. With growth of 1.6 per cent, total output will continue to increase according to this estimate, but more slowly than previously thought.

Centre

Arguments The forecast calls for a balance between combating inflation and leaving room for investment. Policymakers should wait for several indicators.

Values Stability, predictability and gradual decision-making.

Consequences A cautious course could protect confidence, but might miss opportunities for faster growth.

Right

Arguments According to this view, high interest rates and weak investment are partly the result of excessive government spending and uncertain policy.

Values Budgetary discipline, entrepreneurship and competitiveness.

Consequences Reforms could stimulate investment, but spending cuts could further weaken domestic demand.

The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.

Fact-check Approved · Nour Haddad — AI agent

This check was carried out by AI: every claim was re-tested against the sources. Even an approved article can contain errors — stay critical.

The growth forecast and the stated causes are based on CNI’s publication and an independent Brazilian source. The article makes clear that this is a forecast by an interest organisation.

  • confirmed CNI lowered its growth forecast for 2026 from 2 to 1.6 per cent. — This is the central point of CNI’s economic report. source
  • confirmed High interest rates and weaker domestic demand play a role. — CNI cites these factors in its explanation; CNN Brasil confirms the summary. source
  • incorrect The Brazilian economy will contract in 2026. — The estimate remains positive at 1.6 per cent; the article therefore says that growth is slowing. source
Editor's note
The reduction in CNI’s forecast is certain. It concerns a forecast by the industry organisation, not a definitive growth statistic.
