Discord is gradually making public servers more visible beyond its own platform. From 16 November, all so-called Discoverable Servers will get a web page; from mid-December, parts of public conversations may also appear in search engines.

Discord says the measure is intended to make knowledge and conversations from public communities easier to find. It concerns servers listed in Server Discovery and accessible without an invitation. According to Discord, these servers have at least 1,000 members, and administrators choose whether to make their community discoverable.

The new web page may contain information about the server and, from November, automated summaries of conversations in public channels. From mid-December, selected posts from such channels may appear on the web page or in search results. The rollout is gradual, meaning that not every server or post will be visible immediately.

According to Discord, administrators will have settings to exclude channels or switch off web display entirely. Discord also says that users can indicate that their posts should not appear on web pages. In the European Union, displaying posts on web pages is switched off by default, according to TechCrunch, partly because of legal restrictions; users there must therefore give permission first.

The change affects only public parts of discoverable servers. Private servers, direct messages and group conversations are outside the feature, according to Discord. Discord says that usernames and profile pictures will not be shown with posts on web pages, but the content may still end up outside its original Discord context.

This creates a familiar tension between discoverability and privacy. Indexing may also make public conversations on Discord visible to people who do not know the server. It is still unclear how much additional reach this will create and how long posts will remain findable after an administrator has switched off the feature. Discord warns that previously published or cached content will not disappear everywhere immediately.

One story, several perspectives
What is established
  • Discord is rolling out web pages and web searchability for public, discoverable servers.
  • Administrators and users will get settings to limit participation.
  • The feature may make conversations discoverable outside Discord.
Centre

Arguments Public knowledge should be discoverable, but only with clear default settings, transparency and effective removal and appeals procedures.

Values Proportionality, user choice and workable rules.

Consequences More useful information online, provided users and administrators retain sufficient control.

Right

Arguments Anyone who knowingly participates in a public server should expect public discoverability; additional barriers may unnecessarily shut off online communities.

Values Personal responsibility, an open internet and limited platform power.

Consequences Greater reach for communities and creators, but users must remain alert to what they publish.

The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
