Jamie Dornan has spoken about the pressure involved in playing Aragorn in the new Lord of the Rings film The Hunt for Gollum. The actor says Aragorn remains associated for him with Viggo Mortensen, who played the character in the earlier films.
In The Hunt for Gollum, Dornan takes over from Mortensen as the younger Aragorn, also known as Strider. In an interview cited by several film media outlets, he described the character as highly iconic and said he was not trying to surpass his predecessor.
The new film is set before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. Andy Serkis is directing the film and returns as Gollum. Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood are also among the returning actors, according to earlier cast announcements.
The film is not a new version of the existing trilogy, but a separate story set in the same world. Aragorn’s history is depicted anew, with a different actor and at an earlier stage of his life.
Dornan said, according to SlashFilm, that he is mainly trying to bring back something of the energy of Mortensen’s portrayal. The comments do not reveal any substantive details about the story and do not change the planned production.
The casting has already prompted discussion among fans of the original films. Mortensen played Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s trilogy. Jackson is not directing the new production; Serkis is taking on that role. Jackson does, however, remain involved in the production, according to reports.
Warner Bros. has scheduled the film for theatrical release in December 2027, according to reports about the cast. A Dutch release date or further details about distribution are not yet known.
The news is mainly relevant to film enthusiasts because a recognisable character from one of the most successful fantasy series is being recast. Nothing can be established in advance about the film’s quality; the production has not yet been released.
