KPN says fibre-optic access is now available to 6.025 million households in the Netherlands. The milestone was announced on Wednesday during the presentation of its third-quarter results.
According to KPN, these are homes where KPN or its partner Glaspoort can offer fibre-optic access. For almost five million households, KPN says the connection has already been extended to the utility cupboard. Availability therefore does not automatically mean that a household actually uses a fibre-optic subscription.
KPN reported the milestone in its results for the third quarter of 2026. The company says it has placed greater emphasis recently on connecting and activating homes. The telecoms provider cites demand for stable connections for working from home, video calls, cloud applications and gaming, among other uses, as an important reason for further expansion.
The quarterly figures also show that building infrastructure is not the same as growth in the number of fixed-line customers. The number of consumers with a broadband connection fell by 7,000 in the third quarter. KPN therefore describes the broadband market as competitive, with customers able to choose between different providers and networks.
According to figures distributed by KPN and ANP, revenue in the third quarter came to approximately €1.5 billion. Net profit rose by more than 5 per cent to €249 million. Mobile activities contributed to the growth: in the consumer market, 24,000 mobile customers were added during the quarter, and 42,000 in the business market.
The nationwide rollout of fibre-optic networks is being carried out by several network companies. The Authority for Consumers & Markets previously reported that the Netherlands has several major broadband providers and that the number of fibre-optic subscriptions continues to rise. The number of connections is lower than the number of addresses where fibre-optic access is available.
According to KPN, the next step is mainly to increase usage. Households switching providers, activating connections and competition on price, speed and service could all contribute. The new milestone therefore says mainly something about infrastructure coverage, not about the share of people in the Netherlands already using fibre-optic access.
