Nigeria’s first confirmed Ebola patient in the current outbreak was taken to Switzerland for medical treatment on Monday. The patient was in a stable condition, according to Nigerian authorities, but the evacuation does not mean the risk of infection has passed.
The patient, a 42-year-old woman, tested positive for the Bundibugyo virus on 20 October. She had travelled from Uganda via Addis Ababa to Abuja. Nigerian health authorities said her condition had improved significantly before the evacuation.
The woman travelled with her husband, who had no symptoms. Swiss authorities confirmed that the couple arrived on a medical flight on Monday. The patient’s further treatment and her husband’s medical monitoring will continue in Switzerland.
Nigeria is monitoring people in the patient’s vicinity. In the latest situation report from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, 54 contacts had been identified; none of them had tested positive at that point. The authorities have activated a national crisis system.
The source of the infection has not yet been established. The patient stayed in Uganda, but according to reports there is no proof that she was in Congo, where the current outbreak began. Investigators are examining, among other things, whether contacts at Entebbe airport may have played a role.
The World Health Organization previously said that Nigeria did not need restrictions on travel or trade because of this single imported infection. At the same time, vigilance remains necessary: the evacuation removes the patient from Nigeria, but changes nothing about the need for contact tracing and medical monitoring.
