A helicopter belonging to the European peacekeeping mission EUFOR crashed near Brčko in north-eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday. EUFOR has opened an investigation and warns against unconfirmed information about casualties.

The crash occurred during a routine operation in the Brčko area, according to EUFOR and Croatian public broadcaster HRT. EUFOR said no civilians were injured and no civilian infrastructure, property or vehicles were damaged.

Local media report that there may have been casualties. Open writes, citing information from the mayor of Brčko, that three people were killed and twelve injured. HRT stressed, however, that the number of casualties had not yet been officially confirmed at the time of publication.

The identity of the crew and the type of helicopter have also not yet been officially disclosed. Italian media report that it may have been an Italian CH-47 helicopter, but EUFOR did not confirm this in its initial statement.

Emergency services and police went to the scene of the accident. EUFOR says it is investigating the circumstances of the crash fully and will publish more information later once the facts have been established.

EUFOR Althea is the European Union's military mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The mission monitors compliance with the Dayton Peace Agreement and supports security in the country. So far, no consequences for civilian safety beyond the accident itself have been reported.
