A painting by Herman Brood was added to the national art collection on Thursday. The untitled acrylic work was presented at the Collectiecentrum Nederland in Amersfoort, a week before Brood would have turned 80.
The canvas measures 90 by 120 centimetres. The work hung for years at the Belastingdienst and, following the introduction of the Heritage Act 2016, came under the management of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands.
This means that a painting by Brood is officially part of the national collection for the first time. The collection comprises art and heritage objects managed by the government; inclusion does not mean that the work will be permanently displayed in a museum gallery.
Before it was added, research was carried out into whether the painting was genuinely made by Brood. The Cultural Heritage Agency says it worked with Stichting Valsbrood, an organisation of three acquaintances of the artist concerned with distinguishing authentic works from forgeries.
According to the Cultural Heritage Agency, the work is authentic and dates from the early 1990s. The agency describes Brood as a musician and visual artist who experimented with various materials and techniques in his painting practice and often worked with strong primary colours.
The official recognition comes at a time when interest in Brood’s visual art is becoming visible again. Exhibitions and presentations are also being organised outside the national collection around what would have been his 80th birthday, but those activities are separate from the inclusion of this specific work.
The Cultural Heritage Agency presents the addition as posthumous recognition of Brood as an artist. Inclusion in the national collection says nothing in itself about the work’s market value. The work is managed by the Cultural Heritage Agency.
