Patrick Stewart has died aged 86. The British actor became known internationally for his roles in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the X-Men films, but also had a long career on stage.

Stewart died on Wednesday in Los Angeles, his spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak reported. His death was confirmed on Thursday by several international media outlets, including Associated Press and The Guardian.

From 1987, the actor played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The role made him known to a large television audience and later returned in several films and in the series Star Trek: Picard.

A second generation of viewers came to know Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, the leader of the X-Men. He played the role in several films between 2000 and 2017. He played Xavier, among others, in Logan.

Before and alongside this, Stewart was primarily a stage actor. He played Shakespearean roles and appeared on the West End and Broadway. He also regularly worked with Ian McKellen, including in No Man’s Land and Waiting for Godot.

His career therefore encompassed both classic British theatre and major international franchise productions. Stewart often spoke in interviews about the influence of the stage on his film and television work.

According to his spokesperson, Stewart had been dealing with Alzheimer’s and Lewy body dementia in the final period. That information was released by his representative; independent medical details are not publicly available.
