A 38-year-old man from Enschede was sentenced on Thursday to fourteen years in prison for the manslaughter of a 43-year-old woman. The Overijssel District Court also found him guilty of assaulting his partner and sister. A co-defendant received a community service order and a prison sentence equal to the time he had spent on remand.

The Overijssel District Court handed down its ruling in Almelo. According to the court, the woman died in March 2025 at the defendant’s home in Enschede. The defendant was convicted of manslaughter, not murder.

The court also ordered him to pay €107,500 in compensation to the next of kin. The full reasoning behind the sentence is not yet known. It is clear, however, that the court considered the circumstances in which the woman died degrading to human dignity.

The defendant was also convicted of assaulting his partner and sister. The Public Prosecution Service had previously sought an eighteen-year prison sentence and argued that the case involved murder. The court did not accept that classification and convicted the man of manslaughter.

A 25-year-old co-defendant was acquitted of involvement in the manslaughter. He was, however, convicted of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm. He received 102 days in prison, equal to the time spent on remand, and a 120-hour community service order.

The case came to light in March 2025 when officers went to the home. The victim was found there. The police and the Public Prosecution Service based their investigation partly on DNA evidence, camera footage, phone data and witness statements.

The ruling is a new development compared with the sentence sought at the beginning of October. It is not yet known whether the convicted man or the Public Prosecution Service will appeal.
