Apple once again overtook Nvidia on Friday as the company with the largest market capitalisation in the world. This happened during a broad decline in major technology shares, with Nvidia falling more sharply than Apple.

Apple closed on Friday with a market capitalisation of approximately $5.03 trillion. Nvidia ended at around $4.93 trillion, according to market data published by Reuters. The difference was therefore approximately $100 billion.

The shift was not caused by Apple shares rising. The share price fell by approximately 1.2% on Friday. Nvidia lost around 4.2% on the same trading day, causing the chipmaker’s valuation to fall more quickly.

Market capitalisation is the total value of all outstanding shares at the current share price. The ranking between Apple and Nvidia can therefore change quickly. A temporary number-one position says nothing in itself about revenue, profit or the scale of the underlying activities.

The movement comes during a turbulent period for major technology companies. Investors are reassessing how much growth has already been priced into companies involved in artificial intelligence. Nvidia is regarded as an important supplier of chips for data centres and AI systems, while Apple depends mainly on iPhones, services and other consumer electronics.

The stock-market ranking itself changes nothing for Dutch consumers. The development may nevertheless be relevant to pension funds, investment funds and other investors that hold American technology companies in their portfolios. The shift alone does not show why investors sold their shares.

The ranking should therefore mainly be read as a snapshot. For a longer-term assessment of Apple and Nvidia, their business results are also relevant.
