The Philippines have raised the alert level for Mayon volcano from level 2 to level 3 after a moderately explosive eruption. The authorities warn of lava, falling rocks and other volcanic hazards.
The eruption began at 11.53am local time on Friday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. The agency said a dense ash cloud rose about three kilometres above the crater and was carried by the wind towards the west and south-west.
PHIVOLCS describes this as a new phase of magmatic activity. According to the agency, alert level 3 means that the likelihood of lava flows and dangerous pyroclastic flows has increased over the coming days to weeks.
Residents and visitors have been advised to stay outside a permanent six-kilometre danger zone around the crater. According to the agency, ash may fall in parts of Albay province. The agency also advises airlines not to fly close to the volcano’s summit.
Mayon is located in Albay province on the island of Luzon and is known as one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines. Its almost symmetrical cone attracts many tourists, but also makes the area vulnerable when activity increases rapidly.
The Philippine authorities have not announced a widespread evacuation beyond the danger zone. PHIVOLCS says it is monitoring the volcano continuously and will issue new advice if activity changes. Based on the current information, it cannot be established whether a larger eruption will follow.
