Vught's listed station building was successfully moved 13.6 metres eastwards on Friday. The operation took about seven hours and makes room for the construction of a fourth track at the station.
The building was lifted in its entirety and moved along a roller track to its new location. According to rail infrastructure manager ProRail, the station building was in its new place in the station area at the end of the operation.
The station weighs approximately 720 tonnes, is 28 metres long and 9.5 metres wide. The historic basement was moved as well. This made the work technically complex: the building had to remain stable during the move, and the new foundations had to be fully prepared in advance.
The move is part of the work on the railway around Vught. The old location will make room for a fourth track, which will be built below ground level. Moving the building means the listed structure will be preserved.
According to the article, ProRail and the municipality of Vught were involved in the operation. Omroep Brabant reported during the day that the building was first moved several metres and later reached its definitive position. The stairs will then be put back, and the remaining connections to the building will be completed.
The station building dates from 1868. The site also has historical significance because of the station's role during the Second World War, when prisoners were deported from Vught. That history remains connected to the building, even though it now stands in a different position in the station area.
The move does not alter the wider railway project: construction of the sunken track and the station's layout will continue in the coming period. Completing the operation therefore mainly means that the listed building has been secured for the next phase of construction.
