Amsterdam Zuid station will gain a new passenger passage on Sunday. Travellers will use the Brittenpassage while the existing Minervapassage is refurbished.

From Sunday 1 November, train and metro passengers will enter Amsterdam Zuid station via the new Brittenpassage. The passage is on the western side of the station, about 200 metres from the current route. Travellers must therefore temporarily allow for a different walking route between the station entrances, platforms and the surrounding Zuidas area.

The opening is a step in the renewal of Amsterdam Zuid station. Once the new passage is in use, the existing Minervapassage will close for a lengthy refurbishment. The passage is ultimately expected to become about three times wider and higher, allowing passenger flows to be handled more effectively.

The metro infrastructure around the station is also changing. The new passage provides access to both trains and the metro and forms part of the wider Zuidasdok project. The project is intended to improve access to the area, but the works will also bring diversions, temporary entrances and changes to public space in the coming years.

Vervoerregio Amsterdam is warning travellers that the new entrance is not in the same place as the current entrance. From Gustav Mahlerplein, the route runs towards Arnold Schönberglaan; from Zuidplein, the passage is on the other side of the current walking route. Because of the changed route, it may be sensible to allow extra time on Sunday.

The opening comes as Amsterdam Zuid becomes increasingly important as an interchange. The station serves the Zuidas, the Noord/Zuidlijn, regional connections and train routes towards Schiphol and other parts of the Randstad. The new passage should provide room for the growing flow of travellers, but the final capacity will also depend on the later refurbishment of the Minervapassage and other parts of Zuidasdok.

The new entrance is therefore not a completed final destination. The area will remain a building site in the coming years. For travellers, the opening mainly means an immediate change to the route; further renewal of the station will follow.
