The Eredivisie match between SC Cambuur and Go Ahead Eagles was permanently abandoned on Saturday evening after fireworks were thrown again from the away end. The KNVB confirmed the 4-0 scoreline as the official final result.
According to NOS, the match in Leeuwarden had already been temporarily halted because of fireworks. After play resumed, more fireworks were thrown, after which referee Serdar Gözübüyük permanently ended the match, according to NOS. NOS reported that this happened in the closing stages of the match.
The KNVB subsequently decided that the remaining minutes would not be played and that Cambuur would win 4-0. Cambuur can therefore add the three points directly to the standings, NOS reported.
Go Ahead Eagles says it distances itself from the behaviour of its own supporters. Managing director Jan Willem van Dop called the incident unacceptable, according to the club, and said the club wanted to identify the supporters involved and take measures against them.
The club reports that the first possible perpetrators have been identified. This is a statement by Go Ahead Eagles; no public overview of arrests or prosecutions has been published in the sources consulted.
According to Go Ahead Eagles, after the first interruption it was decided in consultation with Cambuur, the KNVB and the local authorities to continue playing, because the club says the regulations left no other choice. After the new fireworks, the match could no longer continue, according to the same statement.
The fireworks thrown again brought the match to a definitive end. It is not yet known whether additional sanctions will follow for the supporters and club involved.
