The Hague will host the first edition of the NN Marathon The Hague on Sunday. The marathon is new to the running calendar and will entail road closures and diversions in parts of the city and surrounding villages.
The full marathon starts and finishes at the Malieveld and takes participants over 42.195 kilometres through, among other places, Zuiderpark, Westland, Kijkduin and Scheveningen. The organisers have also announced shorter distances and a kids’ run.
According to the organisers, the race is new to the Dutch running calendar. The arrival of a major marathon fits the growth in the number of organised running events, but the sources provide no national figures with which that development can be quantified.
The Hague transport operator HTM has warned of diversions. Tram and bus routes will be adjusted while parts of the course are closed; the precise effects vary by route and time.
The marathon therefore has an urban significance alongside its sporting one. The event offers participants and spectators a new public spectacle, while residents, public transport and motorists must take temporary restrictions into account.
The organisers expect thousands of runners, but a definitive number of participants is not yet known. It is also not yet known how many visitors will line the course.
The race is not a results report: the news is that The Hague is organising a marathon for the first time, thereby adding a new annual sporting event to the calendar. The first edition will later show how significant it really is for the city in sporting and economic terms.
