A business jet carrying nine people crashed on Sunday in Palm Beach County, Florida. The aircraft came down near homes and a busy road; the cause is under investigation.

According to the US Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft was a Learjet 60 that had departed from Austin, Texas, bound for the Bahamas. The plane crashed in a residential area near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North.

The Associated Press reported that the aircraft caught fire after the crash. Authorities closed the road in both directions and urged motorists to avoid the area. Emergency services also attended the scene.

At the time of the initial reports, it was not known whether any occupants or people on the ground had been injured or killed. It had also not yet been established what damage had been caused to homes.

The FAA and local emergency services have given no cause for the crash. Investigators must examine, among other things, the flight data, the weather, the aircraft's technical condition and the circumstances immediately before the crash.

The crash is particularly relevant to the Netherlands as a major aviation accident on an international route. Further reporting could still change the number of victims, the identities of those on board and the cause.
