Yamaha will not take part in next week’s MotoGP race in Qatar because of safety concerns. After consulting Qatar, the teams and security advisers, MotoGP says it sees no reason to cancel the event.

Yamaha informed MotoGP on Sunday that its teams would not travel to Qatar. The manufacturer referred to a recent assessment of the situation in the Middle East and to a company policy restricting travel to the region.

MotoGP is sticking with the scheduled race at the Lusail International Circuit from 6 to 8 November. According to the organisation, it consulted the state of Qatar, the circuit, embassies and independent security advisers. MotoGP said that assessment produced no information requiring a change of plans.

According to Reuters, the race was previously postponed from April to November because of the conflict in the region. Reuters reported on Sunday that several riders had requested further guarantees, including on evacuation plans and insurance. Qatar has reportedly promised that teams would not be stranded in the event of an escalation.

MotoGP says it will continue to monitor the risks. According to Reuters, the remaining teams have confirmed that they will travel to Qatar, while Yamaha is reportedly the only manufacturer withdrawing. The ultimate sporting consequences lie with the international motorcycling federation FIM.

MotoGP warns that the decision could have contractual and sporting consequences. That does not mean that a penalty has already been imposed. For now, the issue centres on the clash between a company applying its general travel policy and a sporting organisation which, after its own safety assessment, believes the race can go ahead responsibly.

For Dutch viewers, the precedent is particularly relevant: international sporting events can go ahead while teams or participants individually decline to take part. The decision in itself says nothing about the actual level of safety in Qatar; it mainly shows that Yamaha and MotoGP weigh the same information differently.
