German police are investigating several reports of needles and other metal objects in Halloween sweets. New warnings were also issued in Essen on Monday, while police say no one has been injured so far.

In several German cities, parents found sharp objects in their children’s bags of sweets after Halloween. Tagesschau reports cases in Bremen, Salzgitter and Hannover, among others. In Hannover, police say a nine-year-old girl found needles in three sweets.

Police in Essen also warned families on Monday, according to WDR, to check sweets carefully. The regional broadcaster reports that a needle, metal pins and other sharp objects were found in a chocolate bar and a bag of sweets in two districts of the city.

According to Tagesschau, police are investigating the reports as possible cases of attempted grievous bodily harm. Tagesschau says no one has been injured so far. Police are searching for the people who allegedly tampered with the sweets, Tagesschau reports. The reports themselves do not indicate a common link.

The reports come from several federal states. Alongside Lower Saxony, Tagesschau mentions Thuringia, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. WDR also reports cases from Schleswig-Holstein. This does not automatically mean that all the cases were caused by the same perpetrators.

The warnings mainly concern checking the packaging. Police advise parents to look out for holes, damage and foreign objects. According to the police advice, sweets whose packaging does not appear intact should not be eaten and may be kept as possible evidence.

For Dutch families, the immediate safety warning is mainly relevant to children who celebrated Halloween in Germany or brought sweets back from Germany. The sources consulted contain no report of comparable cases in the Netherlands. The German investigations are still under way, so nothing can be said with certainty about motives or perpetrators.
