Two passenger flights to Warsaw were checked on Tuesday after reports of a bomb on board. A LOT aircraft carrying 181 people made an unscheduled landing at Warsaw-Modlin Airport, while an SAS flight from Copenhagen was investigated at Chopin Airport.
The report concerning the flight from London came in at 9.54am, according to the airport. The airport said the LOT Boeing 737 MAX aircraft landed at Warsaw-Modlin at 10.01am, about 36 kilometres from the Polish capital. Passengers were evacuated while emergency services checked the report, according to the airport.
Modlin was temporarily closed as a result of the incident. The airport said security services were checking the threat and safeguarding those present. It is not yet clear how long the closure lasted or when air traffic fully resumed.
An SAS flight from Copenhagen also received a bomb alert. The aircraft landed at Warsaw-Chopin, the airport within Warsaw's city limits, and was checked there. According to the airport, Chopin remained operational.
The sources consulted provide no confirmation that explosives were found on either aircraft. It is still unclear who made the reports and whether any arrests were made. A bomb alert is therefore not proof that there was actually a bomb on board.
The two incidents are relevant to travellers from the Netherlands because Warsaw is an important transfer hub in Central Europe, with flights from London and Copenhagen connecting there to European networks. It is still unclear whether the two reports are linked. Reuters reports no injuries.
