An Indian tourist died near Mount Everest on Tuesday after two helicopters collided during a landing. A passenger from New Zealand and a Nepalese pilot were injured, Nepalese authorities report.

The collision occurred near Pheriche, at an altitude of about 4,200 metres and below Mount Everest base camp. The helicopters were carrying trekkers returning from an expedition to base camp.

According to a district official from Solukhumbu, a 47-year-old tourist from India died. A passenger from New Zealand was taken to Kathmandu for treatment. The same official said the Nepalese pilot was treated locally.

It is not yet clear how many people were aboard the two aircraft in total. Nor has it been disclosed what caused the helicopters to hit each other during the landing. An investigation is expected to provide more clarity.

Helicopters play an important role in the Everest region. There are no roads to the high-altitude villages, and aircraft are used to evacuate trekkers and guides who become ill or exhausted from the cold and altitude.

The accident occurred during the busy autumn season. The route to base camp had earlier become temporarily difficult to navigate because of heavy snowfall, but as the weather improved thousands of trekkers were able to resume their journeys.

The collision has no direct consequences for accessibility from the Netherlands, but underlines the risks of air transport in a remote mountain region where rescue operations and medical evacuations are heavily dependent on the weather.
