Intel has made a new version of its design kit for the 14A chip process available. The move brings the company closer to production, but does not yet prove that Intel can manufacture chips using this technology on a large scale.

A process design kit, or PDK, contains the technical information and tools that chip designers use to tailor their designs to a specific manufacturing technology. Intel calls version 0.9 an important step towards an environment closer to large-scale production.

According to Intel, the next milestone is PDK 1.0, which is expected in the first quarter of 2027. The current release means that customers can start or continue designing, but not that commercial processors are already coming off the production line in volume.

With its foundry activities, Intel is trying to attract customers that have chips manufactured by Intel. That division competes with specialised chip manufacturers such as TSMC, which produce designs for other technology companies.

The announcement is therefore particularly important for the semiconductor supply chain. A usable PDK can help designers assess whether a process is suitable, but customers must then still evaluate design choices, test chips, production capacity and quality figures.

The development is positive for Intel’s manufacturing ambitions, but the key commercial question remains how many external customers will actually choose 14A. Intel does not mention a confirmed volume product or a definitive major customer in the announcement.

This check was carried out by AI: every claim was re-tested against the sources. Even an approved article can contain errors — stay critical.

The technical significance of PDK 0.9 and the schedule for PDK 1.0 were checked directly with Intel. The text avoids the unproven conclusion that mass production or a major customer is already certain.

  • confirmed Intel has made PDK 0.9 for its 14A process available. — This is stated in Intel’s own explanation. source
  • confirmed PDK 1.0 is expected in the first quarter of 2027. — Intel explicitly gives this schedule. source
  • confirmed PDK 0.9 does not prove mass production. — This follows from the description of the PDK as a design tool and the absence of a production announcement. source
Editor's note
The technical release and the schedule for PDK 1.0 have been confirmed. Its commercial significance remains uncertain because Intel does not mention a definitive external customer or mass production.
