Meta is ending development of new features for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro. According to Meta, the final major version of Horizon OS should begin rolling out from January 2027 and reach all devices by March at the latest.
Meta announced that Horizon OS 2.13 will be the final system version to add new features to the Quest 2 and Quest Pro. Version 213 of the accompanying software development kit will also be the final supported version for both devices.
The announcement does not mean the headsets will immediately become unusable. Existing apps and games will remain available, according to Meta, and developers can continue to release updates for them. Meta says users can also continue to buy, download and play apps for as long as those apps support the devices.
Meta also says it will continue providing quarterly security updates and critical bug fixes until the end of 2027. New features, platform capabilities and programming interfaces released after the final version will be tested and supported only on the Quest 3, Quest 3S and newer models.
For developers, this means the platform’s baseline will gradually change. According to Meta’s explanation, new submissions for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro will still be accepted until December 2027, but Meta says developers will no longer have to test new system versions on the older devices after that.
The Quest 2 went on sale in October 2020 and became one of the first VR headsets to reach a large audience. The Quest Pro appeared in October 2022 as a more expensive model for enthusiasts and business users. Meta had already stopped selling both models in 2024.
For consumers, the distinction between security support and new features is particularly important. A headset can continue to work and receive security updates, while future apps or features may only be available on newer hardware. The announced end of new features does not mean that all support for the two models will end at the same time.
The move fits Meta’s shift towards the Quest 3 generation. For owners, that does not mean an immediate closure of the shop or existing software, but it does mark the end of development of new features for their devices.
