Spain’s Transport Minister, Óscar Puente, is resigning after the train disaster near Urda in which 69 people were killed. He told parliament that he would also no longer stand as the PSOE’s lead candidate in Valladolid.

Puente announced his decision during a sitting of the Spanish parliament. According to Spanish public broadcaster RTVE, he said that a minister cannot remain in office after two serious train accidents in less than a year.

Earlier the same day, the minister had said that he would not resign. That earlier statement came via the Spanish news agency EFE, before Puente announced his departure in parliament. RTVE subsequently reported that he had nevertheless announced his resignation.

The trigger was the collision near Urda, in the province of Toledo. According to RTVE, 69 people were killed and dozens injured in the accident. The disaster prompted an investigation into the safety of the high-speed rail line and political pressure from opposition parties and government partners.

Puente said he first wanted to outline short-term measures. The government has announced, among other things, that additional safety checks will be carried out on the Madrid-Seville line when the automatic system fails. The timetable will also be temporarily adjusted.

The resignation does not affect the ongoing investigations into the cause of the collision. Responsibility for those investigations lies with the competent Spanish authorities. For Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government, the departure means a new political crisis over rail safety, while the victims are still being identified and relatives await clarity.
