At least 25 people have been killed and 30 others injured in an air strike on homes in a village near the Yemeni capital Sanaa, according to the Houthi-controlled Ministry of Health. The attack took place in al-Shariya on Saturday; responsibility has not been independently established.

A spokesman for the Houthi ministry, Anees Alasbahi, told The Associated Press that Saudi Arabia carried out the attack. He said several homes were hit. According to AP, Saudi Arabia had not immediately responded to questions about the accusation.

The Houthis controlled the area around Sanaa and large parts of northern and western Yemen on Saturday. Their opponents, who are backed by Saudi Arabia, are mainly based in the south and east of the country. The war has continued since 2014 and flared up again this year after a prolonged ceasefire collapsed.

AP reported that, according to Houthi authorities, women and children made up most of those killed. The news agency could not independently verify the claim about the number and composition of the victims. German broadcaster DW initially reported, citing international news agencies, a death toll of 22 and the same number of injured as AP later reported.

The attack follows an air strike a day earlier on a market in southern Yemen. Houthi officials reported at least 30 deaths there; both the Houthis and the Saudi-backed army blamed each other. That earlier account has also not been independently established.

The report of new civilian casualties points to the continuing risks for civilians in Yemen. For the Netherlands and Europe, the conflict is relevant because Yemen lies on the Red Sea, an important shipping route. The available information does not yet make clear whether the attack was part of a broader new military campaign or a series of individual retaliatory actions.
