On Saturday, KNMI issued a local warning for dense fog for the first time. The warning did not apply to an entire province, but to a defined area in the central Netherlands.

According to KNMI, dense fog occurred locally in central and southern parts of the Netherlands on Saturday evening. The warning was issued at 5.16pm and remained in force until midnight.

RTV Utrecht reported that yellow code was in force in Vijfheerenlanden, Lopik, IJsselstein, Nieuwegein, Houten and Wijk bij Duurstede, among other places. Parts of South Holland, North Brabant and Gelderland also fell within the warning area.

The local scale is new. From the beginning of November, KNMI switched from warnings issued by province to warnings based on smaller areas. This means a warning can apply to part of a province, while not applying elsewhere in the same province.

Dense fog can severely restrict visibility and therefore particularly disrupt traffic. RTV Utrecht advised road users to reduce their speed, keep sufficient distance and adjust their lighting. The precise traffic situation varies by road and moment.

KNMI distinguishes between the meteorological observation and the warning. Fog is the phenomenon; yellow code is an assessment that the phenomenon could have consequences in a particular location. The warning therefore does not mean that visibility was equally poor everywhere within the area.

For residents, the change is mainly practical: a warning can now apply to their own surroundings without covering the entire province. The first local warning says nothing in itself about a trend in fog or climate; it concerns a change in how hazardous weather is reported.
