Argentina’s intelligence service SIDE said on Saturday that a person had been arrested over death threats against Pope Leo XIV. The arrest came a day before the Pope was due to arrive in Argentina for the second part of his South American tour.
According to SIDE, the arrest took place within 24 hours of the service receiving information about the threat. The operation was led by the federal court of Campana and carried out after cooperation between the intelligence service, the federal police and the justice system, the service said.
The authorities have not disclosed the identity of the person detained. Nor have they said where the arrest took place, through which channel the threats were allegedly made, what their precise content was, or whether the suspect has been formally charged. For now, the accusation therefore comes solely from SIDE’s statement.
The Pope is expected in Argentina on Sunday 8 November. According to his public schedule, he will remain in the country until 11 November, with activities in Buenos Aires, Luján, Córdoba and Claypole. Among others, he will meet President Javier Milei, representatives of civil-society organisations and people from the world of work.
Argentina’s Defence Ministry previously announced that additional air surveillance would be deployed around Buenos Aires and Córdoba from 8 to 11 November. According to the ministry, this involves radar monitoring, command operations and interception. Temporary restrictions apply, among other things, to certain airports, helicopter platforms and drones in the designated areas.
According to the Defence Ministry, the measures form part of the general security plan for the visit and protocols also used for other major national and international gatherings. The arrest adds a separate criminal and intelligence dimension, but no public information yet shows how concrete or credible the threat was.
For the Pope, Argentina is a politically and symbolically important part of his journey through Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. The trip began on 6 November and, according to AP, runs until 17 November. In Argentina, Leo XIV will also speak about social and economic problems; according to AP, poverty stood at 32.3 per cent in the first half of 2026, but that broader agenda is separate from the arrest now reported.

One story, several perspectives
What is established
- SIDE says that a person was arrested over death threats against Pope Leo XIV.
- The authorities have not disclosed the identity, content of the threat or any formal charge.
- Argentina announced additional security measures for the papal visit.
Left
Arguments A threat against a prominent visitor warrants an investigation, but the state must remain transparent and prevent broad security measures or secrecy from undermining legal protections and public scrutiny.
Values Civil rights, proportionality and democratic oversight of intelligence services.
Consequences Greater openness about the legal basis and progress of the investigation could strengthen trust; excessive restrictions could discourage public gatherings and criticism.
Centre
Arguments The authorities may act quickly in response to a credible threat, while judicial review and the presumption of innocence must remain in place. Without further information, caution is needed when drawing conclusions about the seriousness of the threat.
Values Security combined with the rule of law, proportionality and institutional responsibility.
Consequences A temporary, targeted security operation is defensible; the need for measures should be reassessed once more facts become available.
Right
Arguments The state has a duty to protect a head of state and religious leader during a major visit and to intercept potential threats at an early stage, even if not all operational details can be made public.
Values Public order, national security and the protection of office-holders.
Consequences Visible security and rapid intervention can act as a deterrent; excessive restraint could, according to this view, increase risks instead.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
