Taiwan received three new F-16V Block 70 fighter aircraft on Sunday. It is the second delivery under a modernisation programme for the Taiwanese air force approved by the United States.

The three aircraft arrived at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung, Focus Taiwan reports, citing the Taiwanese air force. Taiwan News writes that the air force confirmed the arrival, is putting the aircraft into service and is continuing training.

The first two aircraft from the same programme arrived on 2 October. With the new delivery, Taiwan has received five F-16V Block 70s, according to reports. The wider order comprises dozens of aircraft, but deliveries are taking place in stages.

The F-16V Block 70 is a modernised version of the F-16. The aircraft are intended to strengthen Taiwan’s air defences and operational capacity. The delivery comes as China rejects US arms sales to Taiwan.

Beijing regards Taiwan as part of China and opposes military cooperation between Taipei and Washington. Taiwan has its own government and military, but is formally recognised diplomatically by only a limited number of countries. The United States maintains no formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but does supply defensive equipment.

The arrival of the aircraft will not immediately alter the military balance. New aircraft must be integrated, crewed and maintained. For the region, the delivery is primarily a signal that Washington is continuing defensive cooperation with Taiwan, while China is increasing pressure around the island.

Values Deterrence, the status quo and international predictability.

Consequences Credible defences can deter an attack, but will not automatically reduce tensions.

Right

Arguments Taiwan has the right and the need to strengthen its defences in response to Chinese military pressure.

Values National sovereignty, deterrence and the reliability of allies.

Consequences Faster deliveries and further arming could raise the cost of an attack, but are likely to provoke Chinese countermeasures.

The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
