Videoland adds podcasts to streaming offering
The platform will launch audio and video podcasts in October and bring existing creators on board exclusively.
Videoland is expanding its streaming service from 8 October with audio and video podcasts. The platform wants to bring existing programmes, podcast brands and creators from the RTL and Videoland networks together in one place.
The first titles will appear on 8 October. They include Niet Voor Uitzending with Renze Klamer, Tom van ’t Einde and Gijs Rademaker, and the audio version of Renze. Van der Spek & Van der Spek with Kees van der Spek and Joep van der Spek follows on 12 October.
Moordcast will move exclusively to Videoland from 23 October. Dionne Slagter and Henrik Slagter’s podcast will appear there as both an audio and a video production. Bankzitters de Podcast will also become part of the exclusive offering.
Videoland also says it is developing its own productions covering news, entertainment and crime. According to the announcement, RTL Nieuws is working on a daily news podcast. Later in October, titles including Amerika van Binnenuit, LINDA.meiden x Gooische Vrouwen and Patrick en Eline are scheduled.
With the expansion, Videoland is also trying to reach users at times when they are not watching a series or film. This represents a clear shift from a service focused mainly on pictures to a platform combining multiple forms of media consumption.
The move also has a commercial side. Ad Alliance will take charge of advertising sales for the podcasts and video podcasts. Videoland also wants to add existing DPG titles to its offering and enter into new collaborations with creators and podcast brands.
How many additional subscribers, listeners or how much revenue the expansion is expected to generate has not been disclosed. Nor is it clear which podcasts will remain available outside the exclusive contracts. The announcement does show that streaming services are competing not only for viewing time, but also for creators, communities and daily attention.
The development fits into a broader blurring of the boundary between television, video and audio. For creators, a single distribution platform can offer additional reach and production opportunities. For users, it will probably mean a wider offering, but potentially also more exclusivity and fragmentation between paid services.
