Chip stocks lift AEX by 1.28 per cent
Besi, ASMI and ASML were among the biggest risers on the Amsterdam stock exchange on Friday.
The AEX closed 1.28 per cent higher on Friday. Dutch chip companies provided most of the lift, while oil became cheaper and bond-market yields fell.
BE Semiconductor Industries, known as Besi, was the strongest riser in the AEX, gaining 7 per cent. ASM International rose 5.45 per cent and ASML closed 3.51 per cent higher. Together, the three Dutch chip companies accounted for a large part of the rise in the technology sector.
The AEX was already about 1 per cent higher on Friday afternoon. By the end of the trading day, the gain stood at 1.28 per cent. On the Amsterdam stock exchange, 50 funds rose, while 42 shares closed lower and 13 ended unchanged.
Investors were supported by lower oil prices and a fall in yields on German government bonds. Market reports also indicated that sentiment was influenced by reports of possible higher prices for Samsung’s advanced HBM4 memory chips. The direct cause of price movements on the stock market usually cannot be established with certainty.
The rise came on a day when investors were also waiting for US labour-market figures. Beforehand, the market expected 84,000 new jobs in the United States and unemployment of 4.1 per cent, according to IEX. Such figures can influence expectations about interest rates and economic growth.
Not all Dutch blue-chip stocks benefited. Wolters Kluwer, Prosus and IMCD were among the fallers, according to the closing tally. The oil price meanwhile remained lower: Brent stood at about $101.49 a barrel and US crude at about $90.85.
The stock-market gain says little in itself about ASML, ASMI or Besi’s future results. The companies remain dependent on global investment in chip factories, demand for artificial intelligence, and developments in interest rates, energy prices and trade policy.
