H’ART Museum opens major Matisse exhibition
Eighty works from Centre Pompidou show how Matisse and his contemporaries influenced one another.
H’ART Museum in Amsterdam opens the Chez Matisse exhibition on Saturday. The presentation brings together eighty works from Centre Pompidou with work by artists from Henri Matisse’s artistic circle. It also shows how these artists influenced one another.
The exhibition runs from 3 October 2026 to 14 February 2027 inclusive. According to the museum, the focus is not only on Henri Matisse’s work, but also on the artistic environment in which he worked. The presentation aims to show how artists exchanged ideas about colour, form and material.
The loans come from the collection of Centre Pompidou in Paris. The museum holds one of the most comprehensive Matisse collections. H’ART Museum has been working with Centre Pompidou for some time; the exhibition follows earlier presentations devoted to Vassily Kandinsky and Constantin Brancusi.
Alongside Matisse, works are on display connected with, among others, Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, Pablo Picasso and Sonia Delaunay. The museum also names Pierre Bonnard, Albert Marquet, Kees van Dongen, Natalia Goncharova, Georges Braque, Le Corbusier and Jean Pougny as artists in the context of the exhibition.
The museum presents Matisse as an artist who repeatedly renewed painting. The emphasis is not on a single period of his work, but on the way he experimented with colour, composition and different materials. The presentation aims to show visitors that innovation consists not only of individual masterpieces, but also of exchanges with contemporaries.
Chez Matisse is only the third major retrospective of Matisse in the Netherlands, according to H’ART Museum. This makes the presentation relevant both to visitors who already know his work and to an audience primarily interested in following the broader history of art.
The exhibition opens at the start of Amsterdam’s cultural autumn. For the museum, the collaboration with Centre Pompidou is also a way of making international collections temporarily accessible without visitors having to travel to Paris.
The exhibition is a factual overview, not a new biography of Matisse. The meaning visitors attach to the works remains personal; the museum mainly sets out the connections between artists, techniques and ideas.
