Cause of Boschhuizerbergen wildfire remains unknown
Investigators have ruled out several possible causes, but cannot establish what caused more than a hundred hectares of nature to catch fire.
The cause of the major wildfire in the Boschhuizerbergen near Oostrum remains unclear. An investigation by Brandweer Limburg-Noord and the national Natuurbrandonderzoek team has established where the fire started and which possible causes have been ruled out.
The fire raged in early August and destroyed more than a hundred hectares of nature over several days, according to Veiligheidsregio Limburg-Noord. The investigation, published on Thursday, locates the start of the fire in the middle of the forest, at the site of the juniper scrub.
The investigators were unable to identify a definitive cause. They have ruled out work activities, unexploded wartime remnants, sparks from the railway, the live electrified fence and discarded waste as causes. The report therefore mainly clarifies what can and cannot be inferred from the investigation.
The fire brigade does not say that the fire was deliberate. Nor has it been established that the fire was caused by human action. Without an indication of a specific ignition source, the precise trigger remains unknown.
Boschhuizerbergen is an exceptional nature reserve with valuable habitats in a complex environment. According to the fire brigade, the area's characteristics influenced the fire's ignition and spread. The organisation describes the fire as one of the largest wildfires in the region.
The area is now accessible again. Stichting het Limburgs Landschap advises visitors to stay on the white walking route and not leave the paths. This should protect visitors and promote the recovery of nature.
The land manager previously reported that large parts of the Natura 2000 site had been lost. According to the foundation, the largest juniper scrub in the southern Netherlands appears to have been almost completely destroyed. In the coming years, plans include assessing the damage, restoring paths and fencing, and drawing up a recovery plan.
