A 34-year-old man from Amsterdam was shot dead on the Amstelveenseweg on Saturday morning. Police are investigating what happened and seeking witnesses and camera footage from the area.

The shooting took place shortly after 2.30am in the street, near a hospitality venue by the Overtoomsesluis. Emergency workers tried to resuscitate the victim, but to no avail. Police have not released his identity.

After the incident, the area was cordoned off for forensic examination. Police set up a Large-scale Investigation Team, a partnership deployed in serious violent-crime cases and complex investigations.

Based on initial witness statements, police are taking into account a gunman who ran away in the direction of the Vondelpark. The description issued by police includes a possible tattoo on the right hand. Police emphasise that the investigation is still at an early stage.

Nothing has been disclosed about a possible motive. Nor has it been established whether the victim and the gunman knew each other. Police are asking anyone who saw or heard anything around the time, or who has camera footage, to come forward. Police warn people not to approach a possible suspect themselves.

The case is unrelated to an earlier fatal shooting at the NDSM-kade in Amsterdam-Noord, where the Public Prosecution Service reported this week that a suspect and victim knew each other. As far as is currently known, there is no connection between the cases.

Police are urging witnesses to call 0900-8844. Information can also be passed on anonymously via Meld Misdaad Anoniem. Until a suspect has been arrested, nothing can be concluded about culpability or motive.
