Police arrested a 32-year-old man on Saturday evening after the fatal shooting on the Amstelveenseweg in Amsterdam. The suspect is being held under full restrictions, so police are not yet making any statements about his possible role.
The man was arrested during a raid on a house on the Jan Pieter Heijestraat in Amsterdam-West. A police spokesperson confirmed this to AT5. Police are investigating whether the man was involved in the incident, which took place in the early hours of Friday to Saturday.
A 34-year-old man from Amsterdam was killed in the shooting. He was found on the street shortly after 2.30am near a hospitality venue on the Amstelveenseweg, close to the Overtoomsesluis. Emergency workers tried to resuscitate him, but to no avail.
After the shooting, police launched a Team Grootschalige Opsporing. The area was cordoned off for forensic examination. In the first hours, police took into account the possibility that a gunman had run towards Vondelpark. Burgernet was used to search for a man.
According to AT5, the arrested man is being held under full restrictions. This means he may have contact only with his lawyer. As a result, police cannot say anything for the time being about his identity, possible involvement or any motive, apart from his age.
Police had previously called on witnesses and people with camera footage to come forward. It has not been disclosed whether the arrest resulted from witness statements, camera footage or other investigative material.
The investigation is therefore still at an early stage. An arrest does not mean that the suspicion has been proven; the Public Prosecution Service and the court must later assess precisely which facts the suspect is accused of.
