Drones hit two ships off Bulgarian coast
One ship sank and a second was damaged in Bulgaria’s economic zone.
Two commercial ships were hit by drones on Tuesday in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea. Bulgarian prime minister Rumen Radev subsequently convened an emergency meeting with ministers and security services.
According to Radev, the attack took place approximately 128 kilometres from the Bulgarian coast. The ship Alfa Watan, which was sailing under the Togolese flag, suffered severe structural damage and sank, according to the Bulgarian prime minister.
The second ship, Able, which was sailing under the flag of Palau, caught fire. The entire crew of eighteen was evacuated by a Bulgarian ferry. Two people on board suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital in Varna.
It has not yet been established who deployed the drones. The Bulgarian government has not attributed responsibility to Russia, Ukraine or any other party. That distinction is important because the Black Sea has regularly been the scene of attacks on ships and infrastructure since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Radev summoned representatives of the ministries of Defence, the Interior, Transport and the Environment, together with representatives of the presidential institution and the security services. The government described the incident as having taken place in Bulgaria’s economic zone, not as an attack on the Bulgarian mainland.
The event is relevant to shipping because commercial sea routes in the Black Sea run close to military operations. The attack came shortly after a separate incident in which, according to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, a grain ship off the Romanian coast was hit by Russian drones. That account has not been independently verified.
Bulgaria is a member of NATO. That makes the attack politically sensitive, but an incident in the economic zone does not automatically lead to the application of the alliance’s collective-defence article. The circumstances, the origin of the drones and any damage to the crew and shipping must first be investigated.
